Although PBC has but to formally announce its rumored December 14th Gervonta Davis/David Benavidez doubleheader, however we’re about as near official as we will get. Shortly after Benavidez dispelled rumors that of a David Morrell Jr battle and confirmed that he’d face Jesse Hart, the WBA has given super featherweight champion Lamont Roach Jr clearance to challenge “Tank” for the lightweight title.
Roach (25-1-1, 10 KO), who upset Hector Luis Garcia for the belt final November, has loved a profoundly bizarre reign. The WBA gave him two mandatories in Jono Carroll and Otar Eranosyan, then let him battle the hapless Feargal McCrory as an alternative and made Carroll battle Albert Batyrgaziev whereas Eranosyan continued his year-long sit on the sidelines following his August 2023 eliminator win over Roger Gutierrez. It genuinely is senseless; it’s not like Roach is a few huge moneymaker they’re making an attempt to guard.
He’ll allegedly should battle Batyrgaziev inside 120 days if he loses this one, however they stated the identical factor about Eranosyan so who is aware of.
Davis (30-0, 28 KO), final seen stopping Frank Martin in June, hasn’t fought a compulsory challenger since stopping Rolando Romero greater than two years in the past. There are rumblings that he’ll battle Shakur Stevenson in a unification someday subsequent yr, however for the second, we’ll should content material ourselves with watching him face a brilliant featherweight champion for the second time in 4 fights.
