Ilia Topuria placed on one of many 12 months’s greatest performances when he smoked Alexander Volkanovski earlier this 12 months, changing into UFC Featherweight king in emphatic vogue. Since then, nevertheless, there’s been a bit of Topuria backlash. The Spanish expertise is sort of in love with his own abilities, which is a irritating high quality when he remains unbooked against obvious contender Max Holloway.

Extremely assured and driving excessive himself, UFC Bantamweight kingpin Sean O’Malley can in all probability relate to Topuria greater than most. Nevertheless, “Suga” drew criticism just lately for a grievance about the official pound-for-pound rankings, which at the moment have “El Matador” a spot above O’Malley.

On a latest episode of his podcast, O’Malley gave combined messages about Topuria, questioning if he’ll be subsequent to undergo a fall like Cody Garbrandt earlier than finally complimenting his abilities.

“I tweeted, ‘How the f—okay is Ilia above me on the pound-for-pound? He’s 5 inches shorter and has much less title defenses.’ These are simply information, I wasn’t attempting to be humorous. I bought quite a lot of hate for it … Buddy, I actually might give a f—okay much less the place I’m at on the pound-for-pound.

“Ilia goes to be the following Cody Garbrandt. He gained his good little struggle, he had his little Dominick Cruz, however he’s about to get pieced up by Max Holloway after which go downhill from there. Probably not, I really feel like Ilia is among the most expert guys truly within the UFC. However f—okay Ilia.”

Topuria and O’Malley have jawed at one another previously, so maybe “Suga” is simply persevering with to angle for an eventual shot at double champion standing. Within the interim, each stay unbooked, although O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili and Topuria vs. Holloway are apparent match ups for each champions.
