David Sanchez’s adventure with McLaren has already come to an end. Only three months have passed since the Woking-based team announced the arrival of the former Ferrari man at the beginning of 2024 as the new Technical Director, Car Concept & Performance. The French technician was one of the two big signings wanted by Zak Brown, who also managed to lure Rob Marshall away from Red Bull. It is precisely the latter who, following the Frenchman’s departure, will now assume the role of Chief Designer.

David Sanchez, an unexpected departure from McLaren

“I am grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this team,” it is learned from the Frenchman in the statement released by McLaren just a few minutes ago.

“Although the role we had imagined and agreed upon was not aligned with the reality of the position I found, I leave with respect for the leadership, admiration for the dedication of my colleagues, and appreciation for the openness and honesty with which we discussed and arrived at this decision.”

“I wish this team continued success on its journey to the top position, where it belongs. I look forward to facing my next challenge in F1.”

Andrea Stella, at the helm of the British team since last season, also commented on David Sanchez’s departure: “This further step in the evolution of the structure of the Technical Department and the working model within the Team indicates our commitment to constantly improving our technical capabilities and workflows for greater efficiency and effectiveness.”

“After careful discussion between David Sanchez and the team’s leadership, the joint decision was made to leave the team. Following a mutual reflection, it emerged that the role, responsibilities, and ambitions associated with David’s position were not in line with our initial expectations when he joined us in February 2023. Recognizing this misalignment, both I and David agreed that it would be best to part ways now, allowing him to pursue other opportunities that could better leverage the scope and breadth of his remarkable abilities. We greatly appreciate and are grateful for the contributions David has made during his relatively short period with us and wish him the best in his future endeavors.” – the former Ferrari performance engineer and race engineer concluded.
