Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger hit free company for the primary time this month, and he’s an fascinating case to consider. When he’s wholesome, he’s excellent — he performed 157 video games in each 2018 and 2021, and in these two seasons, he mixed for 65 homers and an OPS round .830. In fact, these are the one two seasons in his six-year profession during which he’s performed greater than 96 video games, with a variety of accidents hampering him all through his profession.
Nonetheless, Haniger has a profession OPS+ of 123 and has been, at instances in his profession, an excellent defensive outfielder. So it’s not stunning that the Dodgers, who’re in the market for an outfielder, are rumored to have an interest.
Haniger’s profession OPS at Angel Stadium is a bizarre addendum to that tweet. His tOPS+ in Anaheim is 108, which means his efficiency there may be eight % higher than his total efficiency in all places. It’s one thing, however simply barely, and contemplating that the Angels are infamous for not having the pitching to get them excessive, it’s in all probability one thing I’d chalk up extra to “hitting towards the Angels” than “hitting at Angel Stadium.”
However I digress. Again to the Dodgers. Haniger’s main defensive place is correct subject, and the Dodgers have a six-time Gold Glove winner on the market in Mookie Betts, who isn’t shifting to second base it doesn’t matter what anybody tells you. Haniger used to play some middle subject, however he hasn’t performed there since 2019 and he wasn’t significantly good on the market when he did play.
However Haniger might definitely slot in as a left-fielder with a while at designated hitter in Los Angeles. MLB Commerce Rumors projects him for a three-year, $39 million deal. This feels rather a lot just like the AJ Pollock deal a number of years in the past, besides all of us bought tricked into considering Pollock was a center-fielder. With Haniger, there’s a bit extra fact in promoting, and he looks like an Andrew Friedman participant in a number of methods.
