5 months after being knocked out within the remaining spherical of a warfare in opposition to Leigh Wooden, Eire’s Michael Conlan returns in opposition to Colombian puncher Miguel Marriaga
FIGHTER-TURNED-PROMOTER Jamie Conlan places on a present at Belfast’s SSE Area that appears well-matched from high to backside. Not solely that, Jamie has the added stress of watching his brother Michael Conlan step again into the ring for the primary time since being knocked out of it by Leigh Wooden in March.
Conlan, 16-1 (8), will tackle gnarled Colombian veteran Miguel Marriaga, 30-5 (26), over 10 rounds on Saturday evening (August 6) realizing one other slip-up might finish his title ambitions. Marriaga has certainly seen higher days at 35, however he solely loses to high quality fighters. The lone man to cease him was Vasiliy Lomachenko, in seven rounds in 2017. Fighters unable to shift the Colombian embrace Oscar Valdez, Nicholas Walters, Joet Gonzalez and Eduardo Ramirez.
However Marriaga is not any stranger to the canvas, having been dropped seven instances as a professional. Conlan can whack, as evidenced by the quantity of bother Wooden was in earlier than his Rocky-esque late comeback in Nottingham. Conlan insists there’s no hangover from that defeat and he’ll be eager to check Marriaga’s ambition early within the bout. The decide is for Conlan to win a lopsided determination.
The remainder of the cardboard is strong. Belfast “Hammer” Padraig McCrory steps up in opposition to Mexican gatekeeper Marco Antonio Periban, 26-5-1 (17). The customer has been stopped by James DeGale and Joshua Buatsi and can do nicely to keep away from the proper hand of McCrory, 13-0 (7). Place your bets on the house fighter inside the gap.
Tougher to name is the 10-round welterweight scrap between Tyrone McKenna, 22-3-1 (6), and Welshman Chris Jenkins, 23-5-3 (8). After beating Julius Indongo over eight rounds in February, the 33-year-old began to look his age when he was blasted out in 4 by Florian Marku in April. McKenna can also be seeking to bounce again after taking a six-round pasting by the hands of Regis Prograis in March. We count on McKenna to prevail on factors.
Limerick welterweight southpaw Paddy Donovan, 8-0 (6), needs to be too good for Redcar’s Tom Hill, 10-2 (2), and there’s a tidily matched bout for the vacant Celtic featherweight strap between Belfast rivals Ruadhan Farrell, 3-0 (2), and Colm Murphy, 4-0 (1).
