The Athletics introduced in the present day that outfielder JJ Bleday has been recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas, with fellow outfielder Conner Capel optioned to Vegas in a corresponding transfer. Bleday is in tonight’s lineup, batting fifth and enjoying left area.
This would be the first look as an Athletic for Bleday, who came to visit from the Marlins this winter in a one-for-one commerce with A.J. Puk going the opposite means. The fourth general number of the 2019 draft, Bleday has been thought-about one of many high prospects within the league however has had an inconsistent skilled profession up to now. He struggled in Double-A in 2021 however hit nicely sufficient in Triple-A final yr to get a 65-game audition within the large leagues. He walked in 12.6% of his plate appearances within the majors but additionally struck out 28.2% of the time and slashed .167/.277/.309 for a wRC+ of 72.
The Marlins determined to maneuver on from him and flipped him for Puk, however Bleday is making some noise thus far this yr. In 119 plate appearances in Triple-A, he’s walked greater than he’s struck out, a 16.8% price of free passes in comparison with only a 12.6% clip for the punchouts. His .316/.429/.643 batting line must be taken with a grain of salt as a result of he’s enjoying within the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, however it’s nonetheless 50% above league common, as proven by his 150 wRC+.
Bleday will now see if he can fare higher in opposition to main league pitchers this yr than he did final yr. If he’s capable of play nicely sufficient to stay round, it might have ramifications on the enterprise aspect of issues. Bleday earned 75 days of service time with the Marlins final yr, which means he’s 97 shy of the 172 which might be required to get to the one-year mark. With about 5 months left within the season, there’s nonetheless an opportunity for him to recover from the road and be on monitor for arbitration after 2025 and free company after 2028. Nevertheless, future non-compulsory assignments might push these targets again.
If Bleday does hit the bottom operating and emerge as a key piece for the A’s, it doesn’t at the moment look like the Marlins can have an excessive amount of remorse. Puk has been completely lights out thus far this yr, posting a 0.75 ERA by 12 innings pitched, putting out 27.1% of batters confronted whereas strolling simply 4.2%. That efficiency appears to have vaulted him into the nearer’s seat, as he’s racked up 5 saves on the yr thus far.
Turning again to Bleday, he’ll bounce into the outfield combine in Oakland subsequent to another gamers seeking to show themselves. Rookie Esteury Ruiz is getting many of the enjoying time in middle whereas Ramón Laureano is the common in proper, seeking to get again right into a groove after his PED suspension and shaky return final yr. Brent Rooker can be within the combine, having an incredible season on the plate up to now, however has been steadily within the designated hitter slot of late.
