The considerably under-the-radar nature of Inexperienced’s firing is a bit stunning, although within the greater image, a change of bench coach generally coincides with the hiring of a brand new supervisor.  With Craig Counsell now working the Cubs’ dugout, it is smart that he would get some say in choosing and selecting his workers — notably at bench coach for the reason that function normally serves because the supervisor’s prime lieutenant.  As an example, Inexperienced was one in every of David Ross’ first hires when Ross grew to become the Cubs’ supervisor throughout the 2019-20 offseason.

Past his 4 years of expertise as Chicago’s bench coach, Inexperienced is greatest identified for his four-year stint because the Padres’ supervisor from 2016-19.  San Diego didn’t have any successful seasons throughout Inexperienced’s tenure, although the Padres had been rebuilding throughout the first few of these years earlier than expectations had been raised after the Manny Machado signing.  The shortage of success with the Friars didn’t totally dim Inexperienced’s prospects as a skipper, since he interviewed with each the Mets and Guardians simply this winter about managerial vacancies.

The 38-year-old Jay solely simply retired in April 2022, hanging up his cleats after 12 MLB seasons (which included a cease with the Cubs in 2017).  It didn’t take lengthy for Jay to leap again into the sport, nonetheless, as Jay was named Miami’s first base coach shortly after ex-teammate Skip Schumaker develop into the Marlins’ supervisor final 12 months.  Jay has been cited as a possible future managerial candidate himself, as he suits the development of golf equipment trying to rent youthful managers extra not too long ago faraway from their enjoying careers.
