Donovan Mitchell enters a brand new period in his profession with the Cleveland Cavaliers this fall, and hopes abound that the All-Star guard can deliver town a Larry O’Brien Trophy, one they haven’t received in six years.
Heading into coaching camp, Mitchell has challenged himself to be a pacesetter defensively, acknowledging that his greatest weak point has been on the much less glamorous aspect of the courtroom, and the one means this workforce reaches its future is with him committing to be an elite two-way backcourt.
“I can play protection. I do know that for a reality,” Mitchell stated confidently, per Cavaliers Nation. “I haven’t proven that, and that’s what I’m wanting ahead to doing right here.”
The three-time All-Star will likely be holding down the backcourt with rising younger expertise, Darius Garland. His play final yr with the Cavs earned him his first All-Star selection, and it got here by the use of his elite playmaking and scoring and his swiper instincts defensively, averaging 1.3 steals a recreation through the common season. Although the Cavs didn’t make the playoffs, this upcoming season’s hopes are a lot increased than merely making the playoffs.
Mitchell might have averaged 1.5 steals a recreation in his closing season with the Utah Jazz, nevertheless it didn’t mitigate any narrative that Mitchell will decide to enjoying protection.
If the Louisville product does determine to play onerous on the defensive aspect, it might elevate him into the highest 10 participant dialog across the League. Protection wins championships, and the Cavaliers roster is aware of that Evan Mobley can defend properly within the paint; it’s simply as much as Mitchell to supply that spark towards an East filled with harmful guards.
He’ll begin with the Toronto Raptors on Oct. 19 in Scotiabank Area.
